Guido and me

“We’re booked in Guy Fawkes. Our room has a view of York Minster.”

The info was relayed at so short a notice. I was unable to do some research and was clueless who Guy Fawkes was even when I was staring at the very spot where he was born while having breakfast. But then I was keen to explore the Minster and walk the Shambles so I missed what I was missing.

In our room there was this painting of Guido, as he called himself while fighting for the Spanish, which was a little unsettling. The eyes stared right at you. But the window was a lovely frame for a nice part of the Minster. And by the time we were leaving I have managed to get used to Guido looking at me as I fell asleep on the four poster every night.

A virtualtourist review says “its historical secret is an ancient cottage in a small courtyard behind the hotel.” I would have preferred reading it before seeing the place. Ah well. Next trip then.
